Call for Entries to the 2007 SEAMEO-Australia Press Award

Deadline extended to 15 January 2008

The SEAMEO Secretariat, the headquarters of the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization, is calling on all print journalists in Southeast Asia to send in their entries to the 2007 SEAMEO-Australia Press Award.

For 2007, the theme is “Reporting on Education for Sustainable Development.

The article should provide analysis on people’s experiences and insights on educating societies about the changing environmental and social conditions; incisive reporting on initiatives to mitigate environmental and social problems and a strong human feel through the voices of different people and sectors, considering social attributes and inter-cultural understanding.

Education for sustainable development is about changing values and behavior and promoting environmental preservation and restoration, respecting cultural diversity, poverty alleviation, gender parity, peace, human rights and social harmony.

It is also about making people aware about balancing environmental, societal and economic considerations in improving the quality of life without compromising the ability of future generations to pursue their own needs.

The recognition is open to print journalists from the SEAMEO member countries Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor Leste and Vietnam.

Eligible entries should be articles published from 1 October 2006 to 30 December 2007.

Australia, a SEAMEO associate member country, coordinates the press award with the SEAMEO Secretariat through the Department of Education, Science and Training in Australia and the Australian Embassy in Bangkok. The prize includes a three-week study visit to Australia and a journalism internship with the Australian newspaper Melbourne Age.

The winner will also receive a plaque of recognition during the 43rd SEAMEO Council Conference in Malaysia in March 2008.

The deadline for nominations, entries and submissions is on 15 January 2008.
